Consume The Right Amount Of Fruit Each Day
The proper amount of daily fruit in our diets is essential, yet I've polled many people asking if they consume the daily recommended servings for their age. Sadly most polled adults don't even eat half of what they should.
I personally love fruits of all shapes, sizes and varieties! I want variety and to be more creative than just grabbing a piece of fruit from the fridge and biting into it! I believe the key to eating the right amount of fruits daily is to be strategic and creative. Think outside the box!
Ways to incorporate fruit into your diet and avoid boredom:
- On top of cereal ~ add one fruit or a combo of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, bananas or use apricots, prunes or dates in plain hot oatmeal cereal
- In a smoothie ~ be creative, experiment with flavours by mixing different fruits; I incorporate vegetables too (but not too much) to get the vitamins and nutrients without overpowering the taste
- Add to plain yogurt ~ try a variety of fruits, like berries, apples, melon, mango, bananas, etc and for variety you can mix in granola for crunch
- Mix into cottage cheese ~ very ripe peaches are my all time favourite mix, but berries are good too
- On top of salads ~ use mangoes, mandarin oranges, apples, kiwi or pineapple
- Add to your entrees ~ use in stir fry with chicken or pork
- In desserts ~ I tend to avoid too many baked goods which usually call for added sugars but sometimes will pair a bowl of fruit with a touch of light table cream, there's so many recipe options for fruity desserts
Rules for Consuming Fruits
1. Eat fruit over drinking fruit juices as juices tend to be higher in sugar with less fibre
2. Choose proper portions, if you don't know the right amount for your age group, the refer to the Canada's Food Guide
3. Don't limit your choices, eat a wide variety of fruits - cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, grapefruit, apricots, peaches, pears, oranges, plums, and mangos are among the lowest in natural sugars
4. Even Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetics need to incorporate fruit in their diets, refer to the Diabetes Canada Handy Portion Guide for proper portion amounts

To replenish the vitamins, minerals, nutrients and fibre that our bodies need. Some have antioxidant properties. While others are good for pain and inflammation. They supply us with positive energy. And help our bodies ward off illness. The list of benefits go on.
Kids and Fruits
For kids it can be even more challenging! I recommend being creative and have fun with the presentation of foods to engage the kids. In many cases you can make it a learning experience too.
When I worked in Early Childhood Education, I enjoyed the Very Hungry Caterpillar story book and so did the kids! I found this cute Hungry Fruit Caterpillar Snack that's very easy to make and can be made with various fruits to suit kids tastes.

Apple Find My iPhone App Review
Well, this week has been a bumpy one! I drove over a screw somewhere on my errands route that penetrated my tire...it was Valentine's Day. Sadly, it caused us to cancel our date night because it was right at the time the shops were closing and couldn't get it fixed until the next day. It was disappointing not following through with our date night plans but we make the most of every situation together wherever!!
The following day I brought the vehicle to a local shop to have the tire patched and after paying, I accidentally left my Apple iPhone on the service counter. I didn't really feel like making lunch so I picked up Mr. Sub on the way home. I looked through the mounds of mail, let the furry kids out, ate lunch and when I reached for my phone, it wasn't there.
Frantically I searched in every room of my house, checked my vehicle, think back to where I used it last. I can't find the phone, oh no! But along comes my trusty hubby with the iPad in hand to the rescue with the Find My iPhone app!
This App allows you to remotely perform these functions:
- Locate a missing device
- Lock the iPhone
- Display a message
- Play a sound
- Erase all the data, all from another iOS device
My hubby immediately locked the phone, although I already have my phone set to lock after 1 minute of inactivity. Then proceeded to locate the device. BANG, there it was on a nice little map showing my iPhone at the auto shop. But he also sent the phone a message too, stating "I'm on my way to pick up my phone, thanks!"
When I got to the shop, I barely stepped out of my vehicle and the manager was bringing it to me. This is an app that you hope you never need to use (kind of like insurance) but it's certainly a great app to have in the event that you have a bad week like mine! This was the silver lining so to speak! This is definitely on the list of my top apps!

Zellers Announces Store Closing Liquidation At Select Locations - Closing in June 2012
Most of us know that Target is set to move into Canada in 2013 to take over 200 Zellers leaseholds. I was a bit surprised at how quickly Zellers has announced the liquidation of certain store locations. They currently have 50 locations listed that are being liquidated. Everything must go!

Sign Up For In-Person Product Testing (GTA, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax)
Before moving to the country, one of my favourite hobbies was product testing!
I was an extremely active member at CTI (Contract Testing Inc) and have a multitude of varying product testing experience from my years of being on board! They offer paid testing, so you can earn some extra cash while shaping the future of products, giving your opinion, meeting new people, all while having fun! (Free lunch or dinner doesn't hurt either if you can pick your testing time close to meal time!)
CTI's head office and testing facility is located in Brampton, Ontario but they also have a few other locations sprouting up across the country and some South of the border too!
I've completed tons of food and beverage tests but have also received tactile tests as well. Most tests paid me between $10 to $20, however focus groups and invitations to return would usually pay more. This is a family friendly facility that has a playroom for the kids (it is unsupervised) and they have product tests from time to time for the kids too!
