Organizing Your Life On The Computer
Many of my friends have made new year resolutions to become more organized in their lives. They talk about cleaning closets, donating clothing, arranging everything neatly, using labels, etc. But what they don't mention is getting organized on the computer.
What is there to organize on the computer?
- Bookmarked Pages
- Email Accounts
- Facebook Apps
- Digital Photographs
- Digital Media
Tips for an organized computer
- Use your document folder, create topic related sub folders
- Create sub folders for bookmarks, for example if you enter contests, you could have folders for daily entry, weekly entry, monthly entry, etc.
- Stick to as few sub folders as possible for quick and easy retrieval
- Don't make miscellaneous folders, be specific
- After uploading photos, scan through for bad photos and discard them immediately
- Name your digital photos as you upload to your computer so you can find a picture quickly without having to scan through numerous numbered pics
- Check email daily and unsubscribe from emails that you do not read
- Limit receipt of emails containing jokes and chain letter type messages
- Do not sign up for e-newsletters you don't have time to read as they just clutter your email inbox
- Delete files that you don't need
- Review your apps on Facebook regularly that you are not utilizing, for example if you requested a freebie or entered a contest that has ended, the app could probably be removed
- Perform a weekly disk cleanup and/or defragment
- Always backup your files
Besides working daily to keep myself organized both on and off the computer, I have allocated 30-60 minutes each week for computer organization. I review apps on Facebook that can be removed, clean up photos (I'm very active with my camera and don't always have time daily to discard the bad ones), scan through bookmarks for time sensitive or expired (for contests, or ongoing promos) and I also run a complete hard drive scan and cleanup the drives.
What do you do to keep your computer organized? We love to hear from our readers!
